‘Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.”’ Exodus 3:13-14

What’s in a name? When you meet someone for the first time typically one of the first things to do is to ask the person his/her name. This helps you identify the person in future and forms the basis for having a meaningful relationship with the person.

In historical times a person’s name reflected the circumstances surrounding the person’s birth or family at the time he/she was born, or who the parents believed the person would become. So, a name was very important in the time of Moses.

When Moses asked the Lord his name in Exodus 3, Moses wanted to provide his fellow Israelites with an idea of the attributes of the deity that was sending him and God showed Moses first-hand that He could not be limited by anyone’s idea of who He is or should be. By introducing Himself as, “I Am who I Am”, the Lord demonstrates that He already is whoever we need Him to be and so much more…

In this study we will be exploring some of the names of God with the understanding that each name reveals a different attribute. We certainly cannot exhaust all His attributes on this side of eternity, so the goal is for us to identify how He has revealed Himself to us already and also gain some understanding of how much more there is to Him.

‘Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.’ 1 Corinthians 12:1

In this study we have gone through each of the gifts of the Spirit as listed in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, identified them under the categories of revelation, power and vocal gifts and the impact they can have in our lives as believers.

These gifts have been given for the benefit of the body of Christ to equip us to walk effectively in our life’s journey. However, it’s critical to note that we should not lose sight of the importance of having a close walk with the Holy Spirit, the giver of the gifts. He is the one who shapes our hearts, molds our characters and helps us utilize these gifts as He has designed.

The Book of Judges Chapters 4 and 5 illustrates a battle between Israel and Canaan. Here we have seen 5 key strategies which are:

• Recognize whose battle it is
• Don’t jump into every battle
• Don’t sit idle when things are going on around you, you must take action
• Address issues in the spirit first
• Remember past victories

The Book of Ruth is the story of simple people who wanted a better life for themselves. But as often happens in life, things didn’t work out as planned. Decisions that looked good in the beginning can at times turn out to have negative effects we never bargained for.

Ruth’s story is an example to us that if indeed we truly put our trust in God, then we should never give up hope regardless of how bad things may appear. He is always at work on our behalf and with God, all things are possible…

Esther is one of the few books in the Old Testament that does not include a priest or prophet as one of the key characters, rather the focus is how God used an orphan girl and her uncle to deliver the Jews. Through this book we see how God divinely orchestrated events to move these unknown people to be both Queen and the second most important person in the kingdom.

Two major learning points for us are:

1. God can use anyone to fulfil His plans. Your background, social status, etc don’t hinder Him in any way.
2. God is a master strategist, He knows exactly what needs to be done at any point in time to fulfil His plans.

“He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4

“Good and upright is the LORD; Therefore, He teaches sinners in the way.” Psalms 25:8

“For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face.” Psalm 11:7 NIV

These are just a couple out of a number of verses in the Bible talking about God’s character. Uprightness is clearly one of the traits used to describe God and naturally as a Father, He expects His children to bear this trait as well. But what exactly is uprightness? How can we tell if we’re walking in it and what should we expect to gain from this?

This series we’re looking at a very popular scripture written by David – Psalm 23 which is often quoted either in its entirety or in parts.
